ProtectGuard

OIL AND WATER REPELLENT. For long-lasting protection of porous building materials, both inside and outside.

To cure the main degradation causes.

A materials natural porosity is the main cause of water infiltration which in turn causes :
- degradation
- erosion
- stains
- growth of micro organisms (moss, lichen, fungi, algae etc)

ProtectGuard treatment is achieved by impregnation to the point of saturation so that ProtectGuard gets deep into a material’s pores, thus making it water repellent. In preventing the ingress of water, ProtectGuard removes the damaging effects of both frost and humidity.

Pollution (industrial emissions and particles, car exhaust, acid rains…) attacks building materials making it dirty and above all causing its degradation..

ProtectGuard, due to its water and oil repellent characteristics, easily prevents all these problems. ProtectGuard treatment prevents dirtiness, staining and ensures the longevity and quality of building renovations.

Oil and fuel stains penetrate, stick to the floors and modify a floors’ aspect.

ProtectGuard treatment is recommended for the protection of a pavement in pedestrian areas, sidewalks, parking, etc.
Oil stains no longer penetrate or sticks to a surface, and neither does chewing gum, which can easily be removed.
A material treated with ProtectGuard becomes almost self-cleaning: where rain removes most stains

The graffiti issue.

Today, the proliferation of graffiti can be considered the likely first cause of a facades aesthetical damage. In particular, new buildings or recently renovated should be protected as soon as possible.

Preventative treatment with ProtectGuard will stop the ink and paint pigments penetrating the porous material.
A wash at “medium pressure powerwash” is generally sufficient for the graffiti‘s removal to be simple, quick and at low cost.

Protect all the porous building materials.

ProtectGuard is a unique water and oil repellent product for floors, walls, and roofs. It is recommended to use inside and outside without any restriction on these materials:
  • Natural stones: limestones (Saint-Vaast stones, Bourgogne lava, tuffeau, comblanchiens,…), marble stones, sandstones, slates.
  • Reconstituted and composite stones
  • Tiles and all the terra cotta
  • Architectural concretes
  • Prefabricated cement flagstones, auto blocking paving stones
  • Mineral coatings, mortars (MPC)
  • Asphalts, bitumen…

A completely invisible protection.

ProtectGuard modifies neither the materials structure nor its colour. On the contrary, the clean and new surface aspect lasts longer.

4. Easy to use.

ProtectGuard is ready to use and doesn’t need precautions before and after its use. On clean and prepared materials, the ProtectGuard treatment can be preferably applied with a low-pressure spray, roller or brush by impregnation until the saturation is achieved. The material is cleaned with water. The efficiency achieves its maximum effectiveness after seven days. ProtectGuard represents the best solution to protect :
  • Outside
  • New buildings
  • Old, renovated buildings
  • Repaired facades.
  • Historic monuments
  • Pedestrian areas, sidewalks…
  • Parking areas, petrol forecourts
  • Roofs, terraces, balconies
  • Swimming pool and barbecue areas
  • Inside
  • Stairs, floors…
  • Fireplace surrounds
  • Kitchen worktops
  • Tilling joints…

The efficiency of the ProtectGuard treatment has been tested by the CEBTP
(Research Experimental Center for Buildings and Public Works), "Masonry and Historic Monuments" department.

Chemical structure :
The ProtectGuard’s unique properties comes from its very original chemical structure, which in turn gives the oil and water repellent properties, with a high resistance to abrasion.
ProtectGuard is a fluorinated acrylic copolymer, which contains four chemical attachments, each one having a specific function:
  • The fluorinated group. These are the fluorine atoms, which, by reducing the surface tension of the treated material, create a real barrier that avoids water and oil penetration (and inks as far as graffiti is concerned). .
  • The cationic group. Allows solubility of the copolymer resin in water and a good link with the mineral substrate.
  • The non-ionic group. It is necessary for the product’s use and allows the fluorinated chains organization on a material surface.
  • The silanated group. This reinforces the copolymer adhesion in the fabric of a materials surface which in turn improves then the abrasion resistance and the treatment duration.

The ProtectGuard performances tested and measured :

· Water repellent test (hydrophobia).
Hydrophobia is measured with water solutions containing iso-propanol in increasing concentrations, numbering from 1 to 10. The test consists of putting some drops of these solutions onto ProtectGuard treated substrates and then to observe the “wetting effect”. Grading is to the number corresponding to the solution which contains the highest isopropanol percentage (that is to say with the lowest surface tension) and which does not wet the substrate after a 30 seconds contact. The higher the grade the greater the water repellent effect of the treatment.
ProtectGuard achieves 10/10 for the majority of treatments.

· Oil repellent test.
Oleophobia is measured in accordance with the method described in the Technical Manual of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATTC 118 test). It evaluates the material non-absorbtivity by a series of 8 oil liquids whose surface tensions are increasingly lower. The test procedure is the same as for the hydrophobia test. The number given corresponds to the oil number with the lowest surface tension and which doesn’t wet the substrate after a 30 seconds contact. The higher the grade is, the more effective is the oil repellent effect of the treatment.
ProtectGuard obtains 8/8 in the majority of cases

Water absorption test under low pressure (Karsten pipe).

This test evaluates the water absorption resistance of a treated material under low pressure.
A water column is put on the material using a graduated tube and one measures the water that penetrates in the material as time passes.

Water absorption test by capillarity.
In order to calculate the water absorption coefficient by capillarity of a treated material, the treated side of the substrates is put into three millimetres of water.
The improvement of the absorbed water mass as time passes allows determining the material capillarity coefficient.

Abrasion resistance test.
Treatments must be resistant to abrasion (rain, repeated washing, and mechanical wear in the case of floor applications). To evaluate this resistance, a mechanical brushing test is made on the substrates. Water and oil repellent tests by capillarity are made on the substrates before and after this brushing operation in order to calculate the performance reduction due to abrasion.

Water absobtion resistance after abrasion
Comparison between Protectguard and another product (X) sold for the same aplication.

X is a water repellent product whose chemical structure doesn’t allow it to adhere to the material unlike ProtectGuard. These two products have been used until saturation on terra cotta and the performances are calculated by the Karsten pipe.

The results show that the water repellent performances of ProtectGuard remain excellent after the material abrasion.

A material protected with ProtectGuard remains permeable to air and water vapour.
ProtectGuard doesn’t modify the materials characteristics. The permeability loss of moisture for a treated material is less than 10 % (result calculated in accordance with the 52615 standard)..

ProtectGuard is approved by the Swiss Public Health Department
(OFSP No. 94 093).
